Kaniva Silos
Measuring approximately 35m x 50m of solid concrete, this is David’s largest mural to date. Stylistically influenced by the Baroque art movement, David has created an artwork that uniquely responds to Kaniva. The Australian Hobby forms the focal point of the artwork, a variety local to the area. Additionally, in collaboration with local photographer Cindy McDonald he incorporated elements of flora which surround the site. To achieve this, they sourced photos of two varieties of native Sun Orchids from the Little Desert. These extremely rare Sun Orchids flower briefly in Spring for a couple weeks.
“We painted for over 200 hours straight through the elements and the cockatoo attacks and rain painting with 400 litres of paint to create this tribute to the little desert and endemic flora and fauna of the Wimmera shire.”
THE ARTIST
David Lee Pereira’s practice is primarily based in drawing and painting as a studio artist and a mural artist. He has exhibited in solo and group shows and has worked on rural art installations publicly and privately on walls mainly through Melbourne, Sydney and Berlin.
Finding the balance between the masculine and the feminine, David Lee Pereira's work entertains a narrative giving a voice to the subtleties of human emotion. As a queer identifying Melbourne born artist from a Euro-Asian heritage, Pereira uses motifs from his past along side binary elements illustrating the blossoming growth that can be achieved through harmony from within.
