The Project
Traditional Asian hand-painted watercolour motifs combined with a modern Australian twist for Emerald Square's local hub and dining precinct. Using bright colours and traditional subjects, Gabby designed 6 recognisable symbols of peace, happiness, honour, nobility and joy to spread love in the local community. With the help of our longtime collaborator Brian, at RIP Graphics, we printed and suspended hundreds of acrylic motifs with the catenary lighting at Emerald Square in Burwood.
The ARTIST
Gabby Malpas is a self-taught watercolour artist raised in New Zealand who has called Sydney home for the past 14 years. Her work is heavily influenced by her Chinese heritage as well as flora and fauna viewed and grown in NSW Australia.
Spirited and compassionate, Gabby is deeply moved by societal issues. As such, her art is subtly imbued with stories and personal experiences related to community, racial and humanitarian matters with more than a hint of chinoiserie (and an absolute pleasure to work with).
“ each symbol is significant to Asian culture. The phoenix, swallows, orioles, camellias, peonies, and chrysanthemums all send messages of peace, joy, happiness, faithfulness, longevity, nobility and prosperity to
the community”
-Gabby
For the community,
Made with love.
