THE PROJECT
Injecting art into Sydney’s newest inner city neighbourhood. Welcome to Makers Dozen, located in the unmissable Kengo Kuma and Associates-designed ‘The Exchange’ in Darling Square.
“Good art is honest expression; personal stories, lessons and wounds rendered into work.”
Makers Dozen
A place for food lovers to come together, to experience quality yet casual food in an exceptionally designed space that transforms from day to night. We were briefed to collaborate with an artist in celebration of the newest, coolest, artisan eatery in Sydney so we turned to New Zealand based master of line work and friendly forms, Andrew J Steel. A curated space, we were tasked with producing an artwork that could sit alongside the unique architectural design of the building as well as Nike Savvas’ new permanent suspended installation. The 35m2 sliding, aluminium canvas is filled with Steel’s hand-painted playful and idiosyncratic characters.
The Artist
Andrew J. Steel (b. 1987) is a New Zealand contemporary artist who has produced some of the largest scale public artworks in New Zealand. Steel believes we become a remix of our influences and what happens to us in our lives; our choices & our circumstances. Therefore an artists role is to live a remarkable life and report back on it in their work. Steel was shaped from an early age by complex family life, house fire & suicide. Respectively, this has defined what relationships, material items and people mean to the artist. Steel’s work is escapism, both for himself & others seeking comfort through the arts.”
As always thank you to Andrew J Steel, Selina Miles and the Lendlease team for another awesome collaboration.
With love,
